"There are people in this world who deal only in extremes. It's naive to think that anything less than extreme measures will stop them."
I don't know how impressed I was with this book. My intent in reading it was for background information for my fiction novel, but I didn't get the kind of background in terms of spycraft, tradecraft or anything else that I expected.
Since I was using this for research, it's a strong look into the history of the British intelligence services. Personally, I have read better.
The Afghan is a fantastic story. Forsyth's story telling takes the reader into the hills of Afghanistan, the belly of a ship and into the world of a terrorist. I have always been a fan of his writing, but this book painted a picture of how a great intelligence operation comes together.
One thing I can say about Shuja Nawaz is that he doesn't pull any punches in his analysis of the relationships between the Pakistan Army, bureaucracy and politicians. His book was part of my research when I was sketching out ideas and thoughts for my debut novel, and I can honestly say that many of the things he wrote were echoed in interviews with Army personnel.
